Oman Vision 2040 aims to expand tourism as an economic driver. Yet, the sector is constrained by infrastructure deficiencies, insufficient global marketing, and a limited range of tourist offerings. Moreover, a lack of inclusive public spaces hinders cultural exchange and diminishes the overall visitor experience.
Some services exist for PwD, they are often limited and not well-publicized, making them difficult to access.
Many facilities lack necessary features such as ramps, elevators, and accessible transportation options.
Issues include inadequate signage, lack of accessible bathrooms, and issuficient staff training on how to assist tourist with disabilities
Improvements can be achieved by adopting international best practices, enhancing infraestructure, and providing comprehensive staff training. While promotion should focus on targeted marketing, campaigns, partnerships with travel agencies, and using social media to highlight available services and success stories.
Technology can play a crucial role by offering solutions like mobile apps for accessible navigation, virtual tours for planning, and assistive devices to aid mobility and access to information.
Our screening criteria for interviewing users were divided into two groups and we have collected the following:
"If a destination is inclusive and accessible, then I think it would be a great place to visit!" - Keelie (hard of hearing), from UK
"I couldn't find any information about the accessible places for wheelchair users in Muttrah." - Janan, from KSA
"Accessibility matters, as Oman has a different language and I'm not a native speaker of the language being used." - Vivek, from India
"Locals can also be helpful with any language barriers you may have." - Hanna & John, from UK
"Better infrastructure around key tourist spots would improve accessibility to our shop. Financial support or grants aimed at small businesses in the tourism sector would help us expand our product offerings and upgrade our facilities." - Ali, business owner from Oman.
"Local interaction is essential for an authentic travel experience. I seek out lesser-known places to connect with locals and discover hidden gems. Immersing myself in the local culture, from trying authentic cuisine to exploring local hotspots, is what makes a trip truly memorable for me." - Vivek, from India
Mu’een is an arabic name/adjective; a person who helps others.
Mu'een is a user-friendly, interactive platform designed to assist tourists with accessibility needs in Oman. Unlike other solutions, Mu'een is easily recognizable and seamlessly integrates with Oman's official systems to help users locate nearby accessible amenities.
Below you will find a short video concept that was created by one of my team members, Halima Al Nasseri.
